Biography
Dr. Danilo Türk (63) was the third President of the Republic of Slovenia (2007-2012). He is a professor of international law and has worked as diplomat and human rights expert.
In the period1992 – 2000 Dr Türk was Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia to the United Nations. In the years 1998-1999 he represented Slovenia on the UN Security Council. He was actively engaged in Security Council’s work related to the situations in Kosovo, Iraq, East Timor and Sierra Leone. He was also Chairman of the Sanctions Committee on Libya (Lockerbie).
In the years 2000 – 2005 Dr. Türk served as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs In that capacity he dealt with the situations in the Balkans (Macedonia and Kosovo), Palestine, Myanmar, Haiti and others.
In 2005 he returned to Slovenia and taught at the Faculty of Law, University in Ljubljana. In 2007 he was elected President of Slovenia for the period of five years. After the ending of his term as President (2012), Dr. Danilo Türk works a member of the Club de Madrid of former, democratically elected presidents and prime ministers. He is also Emeritus Profesor of the Faculty of Law, University in Ljubljana and Visiting Professor of Law at Columbia University, New York.
